What is Reiki? A beginner’s guide

“Reiki is the secret art of inviting happiness.”
— Usui Sensei

When I decided to pursue becoming a reiki practitioner, many of my loved ones expressed enthusiasm but they all had the same question: what is reiki?

At it’s simplest, reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique that also promotes healing. A reiki practitioner uses light touch, where a warm and soothing energy flows from the hands of the practitioner to the client. This flow of energy promotes relaxation and releases tension.

During a session, a reiki practitioner invites a client to either lie or sit down, fully clothed, while assessing their body’s frequency and energy. After an initial assessment, the reiki practitioner will either hover their hands or place them gently on the client at strategic placements throughout the body (however, hands are NEVER placed on private areas).

The practitioner uses high frequency energy to break up lower frequencies. The way I like to explain this is to think about a time when you were around someone who felt “off.” Just being near them was affecting the way you felt, and it took awhile to shake off the dark cloud over you. Then think about someone who you look forward to being around. There’s something about them that radiates joy, and you can’t help but feel happier when you’re around them too.

Everyone I’ve spoken to about this immediately gets it! In fact, it’s such a well-known phenomenon that science has studied and measured the frequencies surrounding people feeling certain emotions. Take a look at the chart below and notice the first two columns in particular. The energetic log is the frequency measured in hertz associated with each emotion.

What reiki does is channel these high-energy frequencies to break up the lower ones which can cause chronic pain, illness, and disease.

I can’t help but be reminded of the way my dish soap spray immediately starts tackling gunk and grease left on my pans. Sometimes the bubbles need to sit for a few minutes, but then the residue that I could have spent loads of time scrubbing without soap comes clean with just a bit of water. Sometimes those stubborn set-in emotions just need a bit of reiki “soap” to get them to start breaking up and dissolving.

If you’re ready to try out reiki for yourself, I’d love to see you!
